چکیده

MYDROASCORBIC (I, 2)) dehydroisoascorbic (2)) and dehydroglucoa scorbic (3) acids will produce a hyperglycemia in rats that persists for weeks. This has been called diabetes. Since dehydroascorbic acid occurs normally in man (4), it is of interest to consider the course of this disease and to further establish the diagnosis of diabetes. Cataracts develop as a complication of human diabetes (5) and appear to be more common in those individuals who are poorly regulated. Cataracts occur in rats with experimental diabetes following pancreatectomy (6), or alloxan injection (7, 8). Those animals with the most severe diabetes develop cataracts the earliest (8). Therefore, an attempt is made to correlate hyperglycemia with the time at which cataracts occur following the injection of dehydroascorbic acid and related substances.

PLASMA DEHYDROASCORBIC ACID LEVELS IN IRANIAN SUBJECTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

Several reports concerning high plasma dehydroascorbic acid (DHAsA) levels in diabetics have been published and from these reports, suggestions that monitoring of DHAsA levels in those persons with a predisposition to diabetes mellitus would be of value. However, conflicting reports have also appeared which do not confirm high levels of DHAsA in diabetic subjects when compared to controls....

Sulfhydryl protection against dehydroascorbic acid diabetes.

Dehydroascorbic acid has been shown to produce diabetes (1, 2). In this respect it is similar to alloxan (3). Whereas alloxan has not yet been shown to occur physiologically, dehydroascorbic acid is accepted as occurring under physiological conditions in the cells of animals (4). Therefore, it is important to study the factors that are known to affect alloxan diabetes in order to determine thei...

The Diabetogenic Effect of Dehydroascorbic

The chemical properties of these two substances are strikingly similar. Both compounds are irreversibly decomposed under biological conditions. Alloxan has a half life of 1 minute (1) and dehydroascorbic acid has a half life of a few minutes (2). Alloxan is readily reduced to dialuric acid (3) with which it forms alloxantin (3). Dehydroascorbic acid is readily reduced to ascorbic acid (4) and a...

The relationship between NQO1 C609T and CAT C-262T genetic polymorphisms and the risk of age-related cataracts

Cataract is multi-factorial eye disease identified by the disturbance of the transparent ocular lens. There is significant evidence suggesting oxidative damage as a major cause of initiation and progression of numerous diseases including cataracts. NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1; OMIM: 125860) and catalase (CAT, OMIM: 115500) are antioxidant enzymes that prevent cells from oxidative str...
